The holy month of Ramadan is a special moment for Muslims worldwide, including in Makassar, a city known for its strong religious values. In an effort to practice the knowledge they have acquired, 135 students from the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Islam dan Bahasa Arab (STIBA) Makassar have been selected to lead Tarawih prayers in several mosques in Makassar and the surrounding areas, such as Gowa and Maros.

The massive participation of STIBA Makassar students as Tarawih prayer leaders is evidence of the spirit of togetherness and commitment to performing worship during the holy month of Ramadan. Every night, students take turns leading the Tarawih prayers.

Alfhabean Mahdani, a student of the Comparative School of Mazhabs and Chairman of Dema STIBA, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead one of the mosques during the month of Ramadan.

“At Masjid Nurul Badar where we were assigned as prayer leaders, we learned to contribute to the teaching of the Qur’an through recitations during Tarawih prayers. We also adhere to the advice from the chairman of STIBA Makassar to set a good example for the congregation,” he said on the 19th of Ramadan 1445 H (April 9, 2024 AD).

This activity receives full support from STIBA Makassar, which sees it as an opportunity to strengthen social ties among students and the surrounding community.

Ustaz Abdullah Yusran, Lc., as the Head of the Qur’an Development Section, stated that the activity is not only about worship but also serves as a form of learning for students.

“This activity is not just about worship but also about learning, personal growth, and togetherness. We are proud of the readiness of students to practice their knowledge in the community,” he said.

The number of 135 students who served as Tarawih prayer leaders reported to the Qur’an Development Section. While the actual number in the field, especially after entering the Ramadan holiday period, could be much higher.
